It started with our daughter's dollhouse
One day last year, I was looking at my daughter's dollhouse when something struck me: it looked like a house straight out of the streets of Amsterdam, and that just didn't feel quite right. Not that it wasn't cute, her dollhouse was lovely: it was tall and narrow with a steep roof, ornate trimmed windows, and a quaint attic room. What bothered me was that it had nothing to do with her actual life. She has never visited Amsterdam or seen a house like that. Here in South Africa, she has seen modern flats and townhouses, yes, but also so many things from home with deeper roots: farmhouses with tin roofs, old style windmills in dry winter grass, dreamy old Cape Dutch homes framed by a post-storm rainbow. So why does she have a dollhouse that looks like it's from somewhere else? And why did I, her mother, pick out that not-from-here dollhouse for her?
That little moment struck with me and it kept niggling. It got us -- Mark and I have always run this business together -- musing about what a childhood memory is really made of. Sometimes it's a specific moment in time, like the glee of a summertime tractor ride. Sometimes it's sensory, like the smell of a cardboard box fort, or the feeling of muddy grass under your toes after a sprinkler fight. It feels like that sort of thing is disappearing from kids' childhoods today, being replaced by things that are shinier and louder but more disconnected from real childhood.
We know we're not alone when we say, as parents, we want more of those simple, timeless memories for our kids. We want our kids to have products that feel real and lived in. Sometimes that means their own world reflected back, say, with a farmhouse that looks like a farm from here. Other times it means going back to basics, with plain materials and open-ended play.
Why we're busy building Happy Houses
We designed our Colour-In Playhouses with all of this in mind. Creating them has been a passion project for us, and they represent the future of our business: There's the cardboard itself, sturdy and blank with that faint whiff of paper, the same stuff kids forts have been made of since our grandparents were kids. Then there is the detail in the design. Our farmhouse features a vintage tractor and an old windmill in the scene because that is what a farm looks like to a South African child, not a red barn that belongs to somewhere else. Most important of all, kids take that playhouse like a backdrop and make their own moments. Families build the house, colour it in however they like, and then climb inside for hours of the kind of open ended play we all remember from being small ourselves. Also, they're made here in South Africa.
It's been an absolute joy sharing our playhouses with you this year. We've loved meeting real families at shows, and hearing from people who told us that their child moved in, or begged grandma to sew curtains to make the house a home, or turned it into a little candy shop. We think, and hope, our playhouses resonate with you, and we look forward to creating so much more along these lines in the coming years.
Our beloved baby range is not going anywhere
Little Weasel began nearly a decade ago as a baby brand, built on helping families embrace those precious and magical early years. Many of you know us from those roots, either from our own website or via our partner retailers and platforms. For example, we were the first to bring a white noise machine to major online platforms in South Africa, back when a lot of good baby products simply weren't available here yet. We built our name on offering top quality items that new parents genuinely need, and we still offer many of our beloved bestsellers today. If you know us from our training spoons and tableware, muslins, or our white noise machines, that range isn't going anywhere. And we remain 100% committed to products that really work, at the top quality, designed responsibly.
What's changing is where we're putting our energy next. Alongside those beloved baby basics, we're building out a new direction focused on play, and on the years just beyond baby, focusing more on toddlerhood, preschool, and the early school years. Some of what's coming will lean specifically South African, and some will simply lean tactile and old school, the kind of plain, hands-on play that doesn't need a place name attached to it. Practical products are part of the plan too. All of it will be guided by the same idea that started with our Colour In Playhouses. We want the things our kids grow up with to actually feel like theirs.
