FAQs

Baby-led weaning is a method for starting your baby on solids. Instead of spoon-feeding them their first solids, you put chunks of soft food directly on the highchair tray and let baby grab the food and feed themselves.

Baby-led weaning can start as soon as babies are ready to start the transition to solid food. Baby training spoons and other utensils are appropriate for use once your baby is ready to start solids, typically at 4 to 6 months of age. However, every baby develops on their own timeline. Always follow your paediatrician’s guidance regarding the appropriate age and method for starting solids.

Research has associated baby-led weaning with their ability to recognise when they are full and to be less fussy with their food. It also supports the development of chewing skills, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skills. When in doubt, speak to your paediatrician about whether baby-led weaning is right for your family.
